Remember When People Were Stupid (Unlike Now)

It’s easy to take the piss out of a dead person, because they don’t bite back. It’s also easy to puff them up. People who would yell to the hills that Steve Irwin was a dickhead and a disgrace to the name of Australia were blabbering on about how incredible he was after his death. However, while people improve with time, events and states of reality seem to get shockingly worse.
It seems everything is worse in it’s current form. These days people are ruder. These days life is more dangerous. These days Governments are more corrupt.
Or are they? I honestly think not. People only get away with these kinds of rhetorical accusations because the past, obviously, has no way to bite back. There’s a convenience to thinking you’re the first to suffer the injustices of a new time.
We sell a book at my book shop called the Princess Bitchface Syndrome. It’s a good enough book. On the back however, it talks about how raising girls today is harder than ever before. Harder than the 1400’s? The 500’s? I don’t know- I have some reservations about the accuracy of that statement.
Everyone likes to think that their suffering is special. That somehow they’ve got it worse than anyone in history. However, for every terrorist attack, there was a World War Two Fatality. Every job lost to the Internet and downsizing is a job lost to the great machines of the industrial revolution. Every slaughtered Whale is a dead Dodo.
And the sad truth? Every pathetic selfish ignorant stupid G Y’er is a pathetic selfish ignorant stupid Baby Boomer is a pathetic selfish ignorant stupid Anglo Saxon is a pathetic selfish ignorant stupid Roman Emperor is a pathetic selfish ignorant stupid Caveman. The specifics are different – otherwise, we’re pretty much dealing with the same kind of shit.
