The Swastika
January 5th 2007 01:20
I was going to Chinatown one day when I stopped and stared at a can of Vegetarian Soy Sauce. Not that the product itself seemed unusual… just the fact that on either side of the label, sat a little Swastika.
‘Wow’ I thought, ‘those Chinese Vegetarians are pretty scary.’ The thought, though, that Vegetarian Soy Sauce had any real link to Nazi ideology, was banished pretty quickly.
It occurred to me it wasn’t the first Swastika I’d found out of place. We have one in our home, Chinese (I think), pre WWII. I remember asking Mum about it, and her explaining it was a ‘peace symbol’.
This isn’t too far from the truth. The term ‘Swastika’ is derived from Sanskrit, and means good fortune or well being. It is considered a sacred symbol in the religions Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Odinism.
So how does a good little symbol get mixed up with a big bad political party like the Nazis? The story goes along with a bloke called Heinrich Schliemann, who found a couple of Swastikas in the ruins of Troy. His extensive research seemed to confirm the symbol as a specifically Euro-Indian symbol. This is pretty much what suggested to Hitler and his crew that it was a symbol used by the Aryan race, the forefathers of the German people – the perfect symbol of an aggressively patriotic party.
So next time you see some rednecks scrawled a Swastika over the wall, smile, and embrace the message of well being and good fortune it embodies, and say “Mate – you don’t even know what you’re saying.”

Welcome back ... no post on Woodford? awww. I heard it was good?
Yes, Swastika's all over India too, very religious symbol, but wasn't Hitler a religious nut, Like Ghenkis Khan - a lover of magic and power?
Hmmm, talking of which ... the magic of orble. I am blown away by the synchronicity of post topics sometimes and this is another one that has got me going today. I was just talking and thinking about swastika's and Hitler's manipulation of said sign with my 10-year-old daughter a couple of days ago...
*cue twighlight zone music*
*lol*
nice post...

More incrediable is the movement to win back the Swastika as a symbol of good. They have a web site and cover much of the history before it was usurped by the Nazis.

Look at your image in the railings of the 'swastika' then look (on google or wherever else) at a german swastika.
Notice anything?
The germans reversed the way it rotates as such. So the symbols are actually different, but only just.

I think anyway
but the images you showed weren't swastikas because they weren't the right way around
easily confused, but there is a difference.
Although yes, it can be a swastika without well ... being a swastika.
