Debate Battle: Should Ecstasy Be Legalised?
November 26th 2007 01:00
SHOULD ECSTASY BE LEGALISED?
If you were a politician and there were going to be no opinion backlash against either choice would you vote FOR or AGAINST Ecstasy (Specifically MDMA) being made legal.
FOR- Legalization removes the mystique of an 'illicit drug'.
Deaths from unknow contents (such as the large number of deaths associated with deadly PMA pills thought to contain MDMA) would be eliminated.
Money would go towards Health Initiatives not organised crime.
Product would be regulated.
AGAINST - Dangerous Drug which has caused death in the past.
Gateway Drug
Legalization is a slippery slope into complete legalization of all drugs.
Drug use is always dangerous and it is our moral duty to protect against it on all levels.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
1) Insults are to be witty and in good humor. Apart from that stick to arguing about the facts.2) You can take either side of an argument regardless of your actual views. In fact you are encouraged to take the other side now and again, it's mind expanding.
3) The debate will take place via comments in response to the official debate post on the host blog.
4) Anyone can participate.
5) Anonymous comments are discouraged.

Also, I don't think the toxicity of MDMA has been conclusively shown... the report that got all the media hype turned out to be fradulent, I remember.
I'd say more kids die using ecstasy because it IS an illegal drug... drug labs often replace the (relatively) benign MDMA with something else that mimics the effects, but can be toxic.

No drug on earth should be 'illegal', illegal makes it that much more sought after, makes it harder for those addicted to it to get help and doesn't generelly lower the consumption rate anyway.
It should be legalized but not commercialized, don't upt people in prison for taking drugs, put them into rehab or something. The same way we treat alcohol and smoking is health issues we should treat drugs as health issues too. Heck, even some drugs cause less damage than alcohol or smoking yet they end up with people in jail simply because of social taboo.

So say people who eat to much sugar can burn out there pancreas and they get diabetes well E forces this gland (who's name i have completely forgotten) to pump out the happy hormone and it can burn out. So basically what this means is it possible for you to have this damaged beyond repair and you can live the rest of your life unable to feel good. Now that is far worse than death and something closer to a living hell.
So based on this i find it hard to see on logical ground to permit use! If you go to a modern Psyc ward in a hospital you will actually find a large number of the patients are their purely from drug abuse and the damaging it has caused to their brain.
There are greater things to fear than death and a good chunk of the psychedelics and accelerates like Meth and Speed can lead you quite easily down that path from long term use, bad batch or a physically negative reaction.

My understanding was that Seretonin depletion was rarely a long term effect but chuck some data my way and I will reads up on it.
The question here is - is it better that we have the current unregulated uindustry or that we support a regulated one?

I'm not sure legalising ecstasy is such a good idea, as how would the quality be monitored? Wouldn't legalising it mean there would be more crap being sold? More crap being sold would increase the number of bad reactions which subsequently can lead to death.
MDMA is an amazing drug, but it saps the seratonin levels which are not repleted.
Generation X and Y are the true guinea pigs for ecstasy use .... what will they be like in decades to come?

I'm not for commercialisation, just legalisation and treatment.
Of course the whole thing wouldn't work without commercialisation, being the capitalists we are.

thizz can be a very powerful drug and there for is sought after by many a person. but though its fun prolonged use can lead to depression and just an overall 'slowness' that no one wants to end up with.
i dont think the occasional recreational use is the thing that hurts people and if that is wat people would use it for then by all means it should be legalized. but the thing is, that once u start using it all u can think or talk about is how ur so excited for the next time u get to do it. i know firsthand that me and my friends daily conversations have changed considerably since we started doing stuff like this from just kidding around about random stuff to either just kiddin around about drugs or talking seriously about drugs. things like this change a person and ur friends that dont make the change with u r gonna stop liking u so much. starting on this stuff is a serious life choice which makes people into either the control recreational user, or the addict who lets it take control of his life.
but getting back to the issue at hand, i was saying that if u happen to be the person with some self control legalizing it and putting limits on how much u could attain at once would be a a great thing. but the only problem is when u put those limits on something there is still going to be underground buying and distributing which would almost defeat the purpose of the legalization.
the other option being to make it completely legal to obtain as much as ur heart desires is a whole nother story. i personally think that by doing this we would in fact be saving lives if purity levels were monitored. i have used supposed 'e' pills that contained absolutely no mdma and no how easy it is to be dicieved when buying them. i think the downside of legalization would be much like when china was invested with opium and the economy was crushed because so many were addicted and the chanks stopped caring about anything but getting their fix. i know that mdma has no physical addiction qualities and people say its less dangerous because of that, but i've been addicted to oxy and had to deal with the withdrawals and cravings from that and tho they were tuff to deal with i have to say it wasnt much harder to stop than e is. the thing that really gets people is that once they've felt so good they dont see the point in feeling any less alive then they did at that moment. and from that point on they are almost always anxious in anticipation of the next time they will get to do it. at this point u change. ur evry day thoughts as well as ur conversations with others. people use its lack of physical addiction as an excuse to continue use saying they can stop at any time and that the only reason they dont stop is because they 'know' they could whenever and because they dont really think its that bad. once its legal many more will start use and even if they arnt hurt by the long term effects,(which they most likely will be to various extents) they will be changed by it and pretty soon will stop enjoying normal things so much that they used to like simply hanging out with friends. cause why hang out with friends when u could hang out with friends on e?
i really like wat benjamin said here, "this means is it possible for you to have this(seritonin gland) damaged beyond repair and you can live the rest of your life unable to feel good. Now that is far worse than death and something closer to a living hell." so if saving lives is worth the cost of possibly ruining many of those same ones, then maybe it should be made legal.
i do use all kinds of illicit substances and know that ur getting on a slippery slope when u start any kind of drug physically addictive or not. as far as legalizing it goes, those are wat i think the pros and cons would be so i really havnt a clue if it would be worth it so u can decide for urself..

Anon 2, I wonder is that is really a valid legal arguement
