Sunni and Shia -A Crash Course
September 3rd 2007 03:27
A lot of people in the Blogosphere like to talk about Muslims. Most of them, it would seem, just pull ‘facts’ out their arse.
Not me however. No, in fact, I am the wisest Muslim expert on Orble – Nay – the Internet! Thus I will now inform you on the difference between Sunni and Shia Muslims.
Now that I’ve finished with my delightfully witty self reference, let’s get into things.
• Sunni Muslims.
Sunni Muslims are in the majority. They take instruction from Shariah law based on the Qur'an and the Sunnah. They are then further divided into four subgroups, who pretty much get along.
• Shi’a Muslims
Obviously, there’s less of this mob than of the Sunni’s. They follow the teachings of the prophet Muhammad, and particular members of his bloodline.
There’s a bit of debate amongst a few folk as to what is what isn’t Islam/Muslim. This post might give you an idea of the depth of the argument. However, as far as I can see, they’re both defined as Islam, so that’s it.
For me it helps to thing of the Christians and Jews as guidance points, all you Islamically disadvantaged individuals. Shi’a are a bit like Christians in following teachings of a prophet (like Christians do Jesus). Sunni’s are all like Jews who like their books (Jews have Old Testament I think, and the Torah.)
There you go.

Get along? haha, I guess were talking relatively here...
Shia muslims are an odd bunch, as far as I know theres a bunch of 'em and some of em are more Sunni than shia.
But the ones in Iraq don't really follow Prophet Muhammed, they are under the belief that Ali, was supposed to be the last prophet of god. Apparently, in their version, Muhammed made some sorcery to trick the Angel Gabriel into visiting him instead of Ali.
They also say that Omar, another great man in the Muslim world, actually killed Ali. Historically speaking he didn't, in fact shias killed Ali, or at least their ancestors did. Kind of odd ball, but they won't have it any other way.
But thats just the Iraqi/Iranian shias, I know of one from eriteria who calls himself Shia but doesn't subscribe to shia doctrine, I don't really know why he does, but I suppose theres more to the word Shia than what one might assume.
The thing is Shias broke off from Muslims, it was, of course, politically inspired more than anything else. While Islam does suffer from the same political problems as does any other religion Shias are particularly hardly hit given it was created as a means to divide a people and control them.
I mean, with all these random fatwas being passed around, addressing the most inane of issues, you think Islam has it tough. Look at Iran and some of the 'fatwas' coming out of their shia religous leaders. They've actually legalized pedophilia, beastiality, re-written what marriage is fundamentally about (from an Islamic perspective) and a bunch of other crazy stuff.
Some of their ceremonies have a lot in common with Christianity, in fact to the uninformed they look more Christian than Muslim when in worship. For instance they have a parade every year with a statute of Ali and onto it they attach dollar notes. I tihnk some Christians do the same with a statue of Jesus.
I don't want to accociate with Shias, but the truth is I don't want to accociate with Bin Laden or the Saudi government. You could just say that Shias are just an extremely bent offshoot of the core of Islam.
