The Case Against Marijuana
October 8th 2007 13:08
However, There is a strong case against Marijuana, and it’s important to explore it.
The first point is of course that it’s dangerous. Cigarettes may do more physical damage, but it’s the mental damage of marijuana that is a cause for concern. While pot has not been implicated in the causing of Mental Illness as such, it is definitely a factor in speeding up the onset of pre-existing conditions such as schizophrenia.
Many defenders of marijuana will use statistics saying that is has proven itself to not be as bad as other drugs. This though is effectively a non-argument. If one claims that Osama Bin Laden was not as bad as Hitler, does that make him good? Of course not. So if marijuana isn’t as bad as PMA or methamphetamine, does that instantly qualify it as good? Again – no way.
Pot is most commonly attacked for being a gateway drug. Just because this argument has been widely criticized, does not render it invalid. When people experience a high, it is a natural inclination to take that high to the maximum extent. For many, that introduction to a powerful high (more powerful than legal drugs in it’s unique type of feeling) is the first step to experimentation with other illegal drugs such as ecstasy, speed, cocaine and, ultimately, heroin.
When deciding whether Marijuana should change from legal to illegal, there is a temptation to base this on other substances statuses, or other such independent circumstances. This is a bad idea. Precedents are not what are important – safety is. Marijuana should be assessed on one criteria alone; Is it safe enough to be permitted legality? On the basic of links to mental illness and other associated health problems – I say no.
