David Hicks is a Terrorist! No, he's a Victim!
April 3rd 2007 05:25
Blah blah blah. Everybody gets all psyched up over Hicksy. Some like to say he was the 911 mastermind, some say he was just a bit lost on the way from the pub to the loo and ended up in Afghanistan. The truth is probably in the middle there somewhere.
And to be honest the truth doesn't really matter.
I mean, of course it does, ultimately. In the end, it'll be of some great importance. But all those hard left wing/ right wing pundits claiming they know the deal, need to stick their head in a bucket of ice water. I don't know if Hicks is guilty or not. Neither do they. Again, it doesn't really matter for us right now.
The point is, if you're jumping for the pro-Hicks or anti-Hicks bandwagon, chance is you've badly missed the point. This isn't about Hicks. It's about justice.
It's about being imprisoned AFTER you've been found guilty, not BEFORE. It's about Australia having the balls to stand up for their own citizens (before the election year).
Maybe he's a terrorist. Maybe he isn't. But what he IS is a human, and an Aussie. And if you believe that Australians should have their Governments to protect them, and their guilt proven before being locked away, then you’d really have to agree that something smells bad about the Hicks case.
Or you can continue looking like a moron and pretend you know exactly whether or not he’s guilty. Your choice.

For the Sake of Argument
My Apologetics
Where Hicks is guilty or not is now impossible to determine.
The evidence was tainted and tampered.
The courts were prejudiced.
Credible reports of abuse and torure were never investigated.
The charges were retrospective.
In any other legal system the case would be thrown out for any one of these reasons.
Justice was neither done, nor seen to be done.
Instead we got what looks exactly like a Gulag Guilty Plea.

People are looking at completely different issues, which is so frustrating to watch.
