Living With Nature

February 21st 2008 13:16
There’s a 100% effective way to protect beach goers from shark attacks. Kill all the sharks. And why stop there? We see people dying from spiders, snakes, lions, tigers, bears, wolves… let’s just kill the lot of them.

Of course, this is a stupid idea. We can’t just eliminate all the dangers in nature. However our common approach seems to be to hide from nature – put ‘us’ in the house, control the places where trees are and aren’t, cut the grass and determine the boundaries between our space, and natural space.

There is still a niggling feeling that we have yet to really, as collective humanity, worked out how to best live with nature. And that maybe by cutting ourselves off from the natural world, we are avoiding the complications rather than dealing with them in increasingly more complex and intelligent ways.

I don’t think that we should be wearing loincloths made of dingo skin, and living up gum trees. And I don’t think that we should live in floating cyber-complexes with plastic grass. But somewhere in between there is an answer which is so far better than we’ve been able to work out. As soon as we realize it’s worth working out, it will be awesome.

Canada in Afghanistan

When one talks about countries with interests in Afghanistan, three names came to my mind. Canada, really isn’t one of them.

However a bit of poking around shows they have some considerable involvement. This involvement has increased since the 2001 fall of the Taliban regime. Operation Athena, a battle group in excess of 2000 soldiers, began in July of 2006, based primarily around Kandaha.

As of January 2008, Canada had suffered seventy seven casualties in Afghanistan. As could be expected, this added to growing concerns about Canada’s involvement in Afghanistan. A panel had already been set up in 2007 to address these concerns and assess the value of Canada’s involvement in Afghanistan. The resulting assessment was that it could be best to remain in Afghanistan beyond February 2009, provided certain conditions such as troop number increases and technology advancements were met. It also made a clear assessment that an immediate withdrawal would do more harm than good.

Other Canadian/Afghanistan operation include; Demining, Financial Support, Heavy Weapons Cantonment and Training Operations.

Was Charles Darwin a Racist?

February 14th 2008 05:41
Evolution
A Social Theory of Evolution

Darwinism is effectively the theory of Evolution – the idea that different species evolve through the thriving of creatures with useful genetic traits, which go on to pass on their traits, and the elimination of genetic traits that do not lend themselves to survival.

Social Darwinism is the slightly obscure application of Darwinism to Human beings. The reasoning goes like this; race one has these specific characteristics, which may allow them to be successful. Therefore if we look at the most successful raes in society, we should recognize them as more highly evolved, whereas other less successful races are less evolved and are therefore lesser (For more on this idea, see Nonymous’ post on race and intelligence).

While social Darwinism is to an extent based on sincere Darwinism, it is ultimately inconsistent with Darwin’s scientific views. In fact, Charles Darwin had a considerably progressive view of Negroes for his time.

While Darwinism today, despite controversy, is scientifically accepted, social Darwinism has never been a true element of the theory of evolution, and is more a tool of hate than a genuine scientific theory.

Join a Political Party.

Political Group
A Politiacl Group

I want to recommend something to you. And I want to say this in absolute sincerity.

JOIN A POLITICAL PARTY.

I’m a member of the Greens. I’ve only been to a few meetings so far, unfortunately. However, those meetings told me more about politics than all the Newspapers I’ve ever read. Seeing the people, processes and thinking behind what happens in a country – and WHY, is one of the most fascinating things I’ve ever experienced.

Another reason that I would regard joining a political party to be such a valuable thing is that it makes you a part of the solution. What the solution (or even the problem) specifically is, will depend on your own personal views. But being a part of something fighting for positive change is a dramatically positive and liberating experience.

In a way you also politician-proof your mind. It’s like magic – once you know what the magicians tricks are, you won’t be fooled by his illusions. And once you see the magic of political games played out behind the scenes you will be more aware of the tricks than ever.

What if Iraq is OK?

February 5th 2008 13:25
Much of the criticism of the Bush Regime is centred around the Iraq war. Bush charged in, on a false premise, claiming a fast resolution (not so far) and peace and security to the Iraqi people (not so far, and in some cases, worse now). In fact, following the first Iraq war, Donald Rumpsfeld spoke about how it was decided to leave Saddam Hussein in power, as to remove him would cause Quagmire.

Possible Calamity vs. Certain Bad

Soviet Era Gas Mask
A life so protected, one's joy is neglected? Or a life so exited, that woe is invited?

There is a brick chimney on your roof that has been corroded by rain. You really have two choices. You can climb up on the roof and run the slight risk of slipping and seriously injuring yourself, or you can leave it and wait until it all falls to bits and you have to pay someone a stupid amount of money to fix it for you
