Vegetarians and Vegans

September 30th 2007 12:57
Animals and humans – who is superior? One argument put forward for Vegetarian and Vegan lifestyles is that Humans and animals are equal. And Equals do not eat each other for dinner (Fish and Bundy excluded).

However that argument sounds completely dodgy to me. If Humans and animals are equal, then why can man not eat sheep, while wolves can? In fact, if we’re equal to Lions, how come they get to eat us, and not the other way around?

I’m no Vegetarian (could you guess?). I have difficulty with the term animal rights (something to do with the visualisation of a Kangaroo voting). However, I do think that humans have a duty to animals.

Stop Eating Animals

1. Because we’re more dangerous. OK, so if you’re trapped in a cave with a Mountain Lion or a Cobra or an angry Baboon, then they’re fair game. But generally we’re a larger threat to animals than they are to us. Just as adults care for children, just as greenies protect trees, it is essential that we protect animals, from the impact of our own species.

2. Because animals are good for us. Not just if you’re a hippy. People with pets tend to live longer. Whales make us happy, as do dolphins.

3. Because it is not in the interests of humanity to justify cruelty. Individuals such as Ted Bundy began their legacies of cruelty with the torture of small creatures. Societies tolerance of cruelty is to our own detriment.

So that’s it for me. I’m happy to munch on the odd sheep, but I do see that humans have a duty to protect the animal kingdom. We just have to much to loose if we don’t.

Aladdin Hates Arabs

September 13th 2007 12:06
Remember Aladdin? That awesome mid nineties Disney Cartoon? If not (KAPOW! Shame on you!) here’s a reminder:

What’s incredible is when you begin to break down the symbolic messages of the film. For example – who looks the most like an Arab, and who looks the least? Least Araby Arab award goes to our friend and humble narrator, Aladdin himself. The hero of the film. And who looks the MOST like an Arab? The evil and plotting Jafar.

Even if physical appearance is a bit of a long shot, the voices certainly aren’t. Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie? Yanks.

Who sounds like an Arab? The guy at the start of the movie (shifty). The Guards (cruel or stupid and incompetent). Finally Jafar – pure evil.

Was this likely to be intentional? I don’t think so, in a malicious way anyhow. However, I don’t doubt that it was noticed, and accepted, well before the point of no return.

Aladdin has fought of numerous battles against accusations of racism. For example, if you listened to the opening track on the video when it came out, you’d have heard these lyrics.

Oh I come from a land, from a faraway place
Where the caravan camels roam
Where it's flat and immense
And the heat is intense
It's barbaric, but hey, it's home.

However, originally the third and fourth line were different. These originally went;

Where they cut off your ear
If they don’t like your face.

After much “RAH” and anger, Disney agreed to change the lyrics in the Video version. Today, I think, Aladdin DVDs on sale contain the original song.

There was another element to the whole Alladingate controversy. The timing of the film’s release. The film was released in 1992, only a year after the end of the Gulf War. While there is no suggestion that the creators of Aladdin based their racial discourse of characters on an Us vs. Them Wartime mentality, the timing of the film, with it’s particular portrayal, was close enough to touch certain sensitivities.

For me though, as interesting as all this is, I love Aladdin. It was fun, vibrant and brilliant, and is today a tribute to Disney’s creative golden days. I just think that it’s interesting what lies just beneath the surface. Don’t you?

Just to let you know, I oppose Bin Laden.

Individuals such as this man... send shivers up some folks spike. For all we know he could be singing about human rights, ethics, peace or other subjects today associated with Terrorism.

I’m all Anti Laden. Don’t like the fellow. Now, really I didn’t think I needed to put it out there. It just goes without saying…

I thought. However, I’ve now discovered after considerable time on the blogosphere, it seems that not preaching hate, stating your support or being totally insane isn’t enough in these troubled times. I’ve heard conservative bloggers, yellers, whiners and grunters all claim the the Muslim community is ‘like so totally pro terrorism becoz they like, aren’t protesting against him and being loud enough about how terrorism is like, bad.’

I know that I’m not Muslim, dark skinned or able to grow credible facial hair. However, I do seem to be a potential candidate for not dissing Bin Laden enough.

For one, I’m often an advocate of Left Wing ideas. In Australia that doesn’t mean too much. But in America this places me in the category of Liberal – a dirty word meaning a super-powered Anti-Patriotic hate machine intend on destroying all that is good and eating kittens. As I’m thus likely to be automatically aligned with the great forces of evil, it’s probably best I announce my anti-Ladenism before I have to! *Gulp*

Secondly, I’ve written a number of articles defending Muslim’s against intolerance. This could easily align me with the Muslim cause – making me more ONE OF THEM than ONE OF US.

Friends.Alleged Dope smoking human hating communist socialist anarchist Nazi environmentalist devil worshipping orgy encouraging book reading Wikipedia editing media controlling Beatles listening music downloading kitten eating Michael Moore adoring blog writing Christmas shunning homosexual agenda advancing Turnip boycotting propaganda spreading Left wing crackpots; Join with me now! Wave your hands and make a noise – Bin Laden is a knob!
